Horse Training

For Potential Jumper Prospects through Grand Prix Show Jumpers

Training Program

At Shamrock International Equestrian Center, trainer Willie Tynan accepts all levels and types of horses into his training program.  From Young Jumper Championship prospects to top Grand Prix Show Jumpers, he can synthesize the perfect training program for each unique horse.  Willie accepts ambitious riders who wish to excel in the Show Jumping discipline—he provides lessons, training for his or her horse, as well as coaching at the shows.

The relatively small number of horses and riders in our care and/or training allows for individual attention, with no small detail overlooked.   Every single horse is evaluated each day, and thus is given the appropriate amount of work or down time.  We help each rider identify short term and long term goals, and provide enthusiastic support while obtaining these goals.

Training Philosophies

Willie believes in multiple approaches to training a horse.  Depending on the breed, personality, natural ability, age, and tendencies of the horse, there are a huge number of different training exercises and ways of crafting a training program.  While some horses are quick and level-headed, requiring little time to progress, others need longer time periods to master necessary skills.  Willie evaluates each horse for what he or she is, and proceeds appropriately.  The same idea may be applied to riders in training.

Flatwork is an essential element of producing a top quality jumper and a top quality rider.  To master flatwork is to master position, proper aids, and effectiveness, which translates to obedience, forward rhythm, balance, straightness, suppleness, and engagement of the horse—altogether, this produces a horse that is straightforward to ride, and easy to jump.  Once a horse has excellent flatwork basics, he or she will progress much more easily as a jumper.  Willie utilizes many different jumping exercises that include but are not limited to pole work, gymnastic exercises, cavaletti, bending lines, and coursework.
